About Us...

Rachel Wright has been working as a clinician in the field of chemical dependency since 1996. She received her degrees in Psychology and Alcohol Studies at Washington State University. She is a registered counselor, credentialed chemical dependency counselor, and chemical dependency professional. Rachel is also a Delta Society registered Pet Partner, and Licensed Pet Partner Team Evaluator. She is an AAT Professional, holding a certificate in Animal-Assisted Therapy.

Rachel has a great deal of expertise working in both the treatment and school-based settings. She has worked with adolescents and young adults in numerous settings, including: Intensive Inpatient Treatment, Intensive Outpatient/Outpatient Treatment, and High School/Junior High settings. Rachel worked for a local youth agency and in local school districts for 8 years. She currently works for Delta Society as a Program Coordinator in the Pet Partners Program. She and a close friend/colleague, were instrumental in introducing/ incorporating Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) programs, in both the clinical and school-based settings. Agency and District policies were changed to allow for the utilization of Animal-Assisted Therapy.

Rachel's focus is in working with clients facing issues around substance abuse, chemical dependency, and family history of addiction.  Rachel has a strengths-based approach.  She works with clients to provide empowerment and hope while addressing substance use issues. She helps to build upon their passions, talents and goals.  Rachel specializes in Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT), utilizing her therapy dogs as a tool in the healing process with clients. Rachel's warm personality, compassion, and sense of humor allow clients to easily connect with her.

Rachel has a passion for providing AAT as a tool in substance abuse counseling.  She has educated many others in her field on the therapeutic benefits of animals with at-risk youth. She is also the founder/facilitator for the only local AAT Professional Consultation Group.

Growing up, she was surrounded by many pets, and has always had a deep respect and admiration for both animals and nature.  She formed a particularly kindred bond with her cat of 17 years, Lillie. Lillie was the inspiration for Rachel to incorporate Animal-Assisted Therapy into her work with people.

Once Rachel became a Delta Society Pet Partner, she found that incorporating AAT into her work with resistant clients greatly improved engagement levels in counseling. Emotional barriers were broken down, and motivation levels increased. Rachel and her canine colleagues founded Compassionate Canines in order to provide Animal Assisted Interventions (AAI) in a variety of ways, and to inspire others about the strength of the human-animal bond.

Rachel currently lives on the Eastside. She and her husband share their lives with 3 dogs and 3 cats. In her spare time, Rachel enjoys relaxing at the beach, reading, traveling, and running marathons.
